Are matric dances losing their meaning?

It is matric dance season at many schools across the country, and with social media in the mix, learners often feel pressured to outshine one another.
As videos circulating online show, some students arrive in luxury vehicles and designer clothing, turning the event into a display of status rather than a celebration of the milestone.
On Thursday morning, the Siz The World team discussed this trend, asking: “Why have matric dances become so extravagant these days?”
Sizwe Dhlomo acknowledged that it has become a growing phenomenon, referencing a letter earlier this year from the headmaster of Hilton College, South Africa’s most expensive private school. In it, the headmaster criticised parents for their ostentatious behaviour on the sports field sidelines.
Mpho Maboi added that learners in their final year of school should be savouring these moments, rather than worrying about what to wear or which car to arrive in.
