The Thabo Mbeki Foundation shared recently that following Tito Mboweni’s passing, his family asked President Mbeki to deliver a tribute at the funeral, as Tito had seen him as a leader, mentor, and friend. President Mbeki agreed and was listed as a speaker in the family’s draft programme.
However, when the final programme was released just before the funeral, President Mbeki’s name was unexpectedly removed. No explanation was given, but President Mbeki accepted the change without protest and acknowledged that he would not be speaking.
The Siz The World team and listeners discussed how conflict over the wishes of the government and those of the individual or the family in such a situation can be interpreted.
