With school holidays in full swing, the Siz The World team opened up a relatable conversation about how household food budgets are being stretched with children spending more time at home.
The team posed the question: “How much has your food budget increased – and have you noticed the kids are now eating for fun?”
Mpho Maboi reflected on how the holidays highlight the hidden cost of parenting, not because children are hungrier, but because they eat out of boredom.
“Usually, they’re at school and you’ve given them lunch money. They eat at specific times, and then there’s supper – so there’s structure,” she explained. “But when they’re just lounging around at home, they start raiding the fridge.”
Gladys Motele echoed the sentiment, sharing her personal experience.
“In my household, we’re dealing with a three-year-old who needs to be begged to eat proper meals. The only thing he asks for is snacks – so our snacks budget is what’s shooting through the roof.”
Sol Phenduka offered a different perspective, saying he doesn’t blame the kids for snacking more.
“I can’t blame them. Even us adults, when we started working from home, we found ourselves eating more than we did when we were out and about,” he said. “Just find something to keep them engaged and make them forget about food.”
