On 1st November, President Advocate Duma Boko was officially sworn in as the sixth President of Botswana by Chief Justice Terrence Rannowane at the High Court.
Botswana witnessed a historic shift as the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) lost its decades-long hold on power for the first time since independence in 1966.
President Duma Boko, a seasoned human rights lawyer, pledged to the people of Botswana that he would address the country’s challenges.
The 54-year-old leader of the opposition party Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) spoke at a press conference about his legal education, first in Botswana and later at Harvard Law School in the US. His election has been widely celebrated. However, some were unsettled by revelations that Boko had spoken at a Democratic Alliance congress back in 2018.
