U.S. President Donald Trump recently made headlines after complimenting an African reporter during a peace deal signing ceremony at the White House.
The event, held on 27 June 2025, marked a U.S.-brokered peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
During the ceremony, Trump addressed Hariana Veras, a White House correspondent covering Africa.
After Veras spoke, Trump remarked, “So beautifully stated,” before adding, “She’s beautiful… I shouldn’t say that. That could end my political career.” He continued, “But you are beautiful and you’re beautiful inside. I wish I had more reporters like you.”
The incident sparked a lively discussion on Siz The World, where the team debated whether Trump’s comments were inappropriate or simply a genuine compliment.
The question posed to the team and listeners was, “What are your personal rules when it comes to giving compliments in the workplace?”
Sizwe Dhlomo shared his view: “When it comes to work, I don’t play around. No compliments, no hugs unless you are my friend. You just want to keep it professional and avoid blurring the lines.”
Sol Phenduka, on the other hand, admitted he enjoys giving compliments, though he is mindful of context.
“I feel the Donald Trump compliment was genuine but not appropriate for the time and place. There is a way of giving compliments without making it sexual. I give compliments, but I’m very aware of the time and place.”
