Early childhood is a crucial time for social and cognitive development. Kids go through temper tantrums, and mood swings, and start to explore a wider social world. They need to understand their own emotions and those of others.
Providing nurturing and responsive care is key to promoting healthy social and emotional growth in young children. 959 Breakfast recently asked Kaya listeners, “What should parents prioritize in a child?”
Sizwe Dhlomo believes that many social problems arise from a lack of shared values. Ideally, kids should learn these values at home and then apply them in the real world. The language used at home can also shape a child’s future, according to Dhlomo.
Mpho Maboi thinks that cognitive skills develop with age. “Young children learn how to navigate their environment and interact with others. As they progress through primary and high school, their critical thinking skills become more important. Developing social skills at a young age sets the stage for future growth.”
Mfundo Mabalane shared her experience, saying, “My son was supposed to start creche at one year old, but couldn’t due to COVID. Now he struggles to socialize and feels overwhelmed when he enters a room full of happy children. He prefers to sit in the book corner.”
