Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Johannesburg, Siphamandla Zondi about the the Multiparty Charter for South Africa formed by opposition parties seeking to unseat the ANC in the 2024 elections.
Leaders of seven opposition parties met for a two-day convention at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park on Wednesday, where they were formulating terms of agreements for their new partnership.

On DA’s concerns with small parties
“The DA has expressed concerns about small parties, that they are dividing the vote. The big parties are also concerned about the DA. It is all part of a game that is meant to check mate each other. In the end they know that they are in it together, that is why they all agreed to join the national convention, the same way they agreed to join the national dialogue… if they really had misgivings they wouldn’t participate.”

On DA acting like the big brother
“It is the big brother, it is bigger than them, it is significantly big enough to form government, they are running a government of the Western Cape. It’s also the leading party in Midvaal, and they have coalition in Tshwane.
“What it shouldn’t do is over play they part and take the other parties for granted.”
On whether ANC should worry about this Multiparty Charter
“Generally there are two traditions in coalition politics, there are situations where a pact must be followed, for example that’s what happened in elections in Zimbabwe, Kenya, and other places. There are also instances where coalitions are based on the results that are there. You have either options, now they are developing some kind of of common understanding before elections. But this will all depend on the election.
