Presidency has requested ICJ to stop Israeli attacks on Rafah.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has received an urgent request from the South African government asking it to examine whether the announcement by Israel to expand its military operations in Rafah—the last safe haven for those who remain in Gaza.
The South African government requires the World Court to use its authority to stop additional imminent violations of Palestinian rights in Gaza.
The request is in accordance with Rules of Court Article 75(1), “The Court may at any time decide to examine proprio motu whether the circumstances of the case require the indication of provisional measures which ought to be taken or complied with by any or all of the parties.”

In a statement released by Vincent Magwenya, Spokesperson to President Cyril Ramaphosa, he the South African government’s grave concern that the State of Israel’s unprecedented military offensive against Rafah has resulted in and will continue to result in widespread death, injury, and destruction in a request filed with the court on February 12, 2024.
