International Relations Minister Lamola calls for calm amid post-election tensions in Mozambique.
It’s estimated that 39 people have been killed since the beginning of the demonstrations against the highly disputed Mozambican elections, with more than 2,000 people arbitrarily detained, and nearly 1,000 people injured.
Following the destruction of infrastructure on the Mozambican side and attempts by authorities to seek safety in South Africa, the Border Management Authority of South Africa temporarily closed the Lembobo border station last week.
Ronald Lamola, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, told reporters during a briefing on Tuesday that he had spoken with Minister Verónica Macamo of Mozambique on November 6, 2024, about the country’s security situation in the wake of the recent general elections.
“South Africa expresses concern at the outbreak of incidents of post-electoral violence and regrets the loss of lives and destruction of property. We once again reiterate the call made by various leaders in Mozambique to the law enforcement agencies to investigate these incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice speedily.
“We reiterate our calls for calm and restraint, to allow the electoral process to conclude successfully, and to give the Constitutional Court of Mozambique time and space to address the concerns raised by all parties and validate the election results in accordance with its mandate,” Lamola said.
