Kamogelo Stock talks to Phemelo Motene about the death of her granny. Before sharing the horrific details of her granny’s experience, she talks about the history of Hammanskraal’s water challenges.
Stock says that she stopped drinking water in Hammanskraal in 2016.
Around 2016 there was a strike regarding the water saga, where we were burning tyres and blocking the roads because we were wanting clean water. We were told not to drink the tap water…then they started delivering…tank water.

The residents of Hammanskraal were already told back in 2016 that tap water is not fit for consumption. They were asked to avoid using it because it is not safe for drinking or cooking.
Stock and her family have since only used water from the tanks. She confirms that her granny was only given water from the water that was supplied.
This past Thursday (18 May) my granny started having stomach cramps. It then escalated to a runny tummy. We thought…it had something to do with her sugar diabetes…it got worse to the extent that she couldn’t walk properly…I had to help her to the toilet.

By Friday morning the symptoms escalated and Stock rushed her granny to Jubilee Hospital.
She describes the service as very poor.
There were only two nurses available and the hospital was full.

Stock describes how she found her granny covered in vomit without any assistance from anyone at the hospital. Her granny passed away on Sunday morning, 14 May.
Stock blames Water and Sanitation and the Department of Health for the death of her granny.
When asked by Motene if the Department of Health visited her after her granny passed away:
People from the department of health came, but only to take samples.

Stock says that she had already disposed of the tank water after she also experienced Cholera symptoms.
Medication from the hospital helped relieve her of the symptoms, but she believes that the service she received was only because the Premiere of Gauteng was present at the time.
The unemployed Stock and her family no longer use the tank water and instead, they purchase water to drink.
