Desperate EC mom kills her three starving children and hangs herself.
An Eastern Cape woman from Butterworth is accused of killing her three daughters before dying of suicide.
According to reports, one child was stabbed and two of the kids were poisoned. The South African Police Service (SAPS) suspects that poverty was the driving force.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Busisiwe Jemsana Mantashe spokesperson for the Department of Social Development in the Eastern Cape.

“Three kids were found dead, in an apparent suicide and murder as reported by the police. The speculation of whether this is a result of the mother having experiencing hardship or as a result of them starving is something altogether… we are leaving all that to the investigation.” said Mantashe,
Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene, the provincial police commissioner, said it was profoundly troubling and tragic that women experiencing hardship could be pushed to such extremes.
“Socioeconomic challenges can exacerbate their vulnerability to mental health issues. Addressing poverty and promoting mental health support are crucial to prevent such tragedies.
“As we commemorate Women’s Month, I urge women to raise their voices and speak out. It is crucial to address concerns promptly rather than waiting until they become more difficult to resolve,” said Mene
