The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) bids farewell to veteran journalist Sophie Mokoena, who is retiring after a distinguished 31-year career with the public broadcaster.
Widely known as “Mme Sophie,” she is celebrated for her profound contributions to journalism and public broadcasting in a post-apartheid South Africa.
Mokoena, who was serving as the SABC’s International News Editor, began her journey with the corporation in July 1994 as a current affairs anchor on Lesedi FM.
Her career saw her rise through the ranks, becoming a respected political reporter and, later, a key figure in international news.
Throughout her tenure, she was known for her journalistic integrity, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to impartiality, even in the face of political pressure.
In her role as International News Editor, Mokoena brought her expertise to the global stage, earning a reputation for diplomatic finesse and strengthening the SABC’s standing as a credible source of both local and international news.
She has been credited with building strong relationships with leaders across the political spectrum, and her reporting was instrumental in informing the public during crucial moments in the nation’s history.
