Police Minister Bheki Cele has recruited 10,000 police officers to ensure the streets are “sanitized” from crime this festive season and beyond.
Cele announced on Sunday, 10 December that the new recruits will officially join the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Friday, 15 December after completing their recruitment programmed, Project 10K.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Police National Spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe and South African Police Union Spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale.

The new recruits will take to the streets in hotspots across all provinces to ensure zero tolerance for crime during the festive season.
“These officers will be deployed to sanitize the streets and increase the footprint of police in all 9 provinces. Their deployment will be prioritized especially in high crowd zones and places of entertainment this holiday season.
For this holiday and beyond, the SAPS will be stronger as we welcome in the police 10 000 more officers.
The 2023 recruitment process is a direct response to the call by President Cyril Ramaphosa to strengthen our policing capacity and enhance police visibility.”
The 10 000 new police recruits come, according to Cele after the success of Operation Shanela, which has seen SAPS make over 100 000 arrests since May 2023.
In October, Cele launched the National Safer Festive Season Operations with SAPS in the Western Cape.
Police Minister Bheki Cele handed over 36 vehicles to assist police in their efforts to bolster their crime-combatting efforts and heighten visibility in gang-ridden areas where murders are prevalent.
