A severe aid blockade since March 2 has reportedly led to the deaths of 57 children from malnutrition in Gaza, according to the Ministry of Health.
The World Health Organization’s (WHO) warns that if the current situation persists, nearly 71,000 children under five could face acute malnutrition within the next 11 months.
Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) representative in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, briefed journalists in Geneva, stating that Israel’s complete aid embargo has left the WHO with only enough supplies to treat a mere 500 children suffering from acute malnutrition – a fraction of the urgent need.
“People are trapped in this cycle where a lack of diversified food, malnutrition, and disease fuel each other,” Dr. Peeperkorn warned.
His comments follow a new analysis by the UN-backed IPC food security alert scale, published earlier this week. The analysis revealed that one in five people in Gaza – approximately 500,000 individuals – are facing starvation, while the entire population of 2.1 million in the Strip is enduring prolonged food shortages.
