Uncle T had an “aha” moment while chatting with Andy Maqondwana on Feel Good about how some compliments can actually jinx you.
Andy explained that certain things just seem to go downhill once someone compliments or points them out.
It’s not that people have bad intentions, she said, but more like the universe attaches a bit of bad luck to the compliment.
For me, I’ll tell you right now. If you see me working out and losing weight, and then you come and say, ‘Hey girl, you’re losing weight,’ guess what’s going to happen? I’m going to gain it all back and stop exercising,” Andy said.
She shared another example and added, “I remember this used to happen to me every time. My dad would compliment my cooking, specifically umgqusho. Let me tell you, I got umgqusho right once. That man complimented me. Hayike, I’ve been fighting with samp and beans for the rest of my life.”
Andy explained further and said, “Maybe it’s your skin. You have acne-prone skin. You’ve been doing well. And then as soon as somebody compliments your skin, hayike acne comes back with extra vigour and brings cousins, brothers, aunties, uncles.”
Has this ever happened to you? What’s a part of you that doesn’t do well with compliments?
