Most of us shower with the same purpose in mind: to be clean and feel relaxed. You may have wondered how often you should replace your toothbrush and washcloth, and you might wonder if it’s hygienic to use the same cloth for several days (or weeks, or years without replacing them—no judgement!).
According to the National Institutes of Health study, failing to clean your washcloth on a regular basis might turn it into a breeding ground for germs and mould. To make your hygiene routine worthwhile, you need to wash and dry towels regularly.
You should ideally be washing your washcloth every 3-days.
How often should you replace your washcloth?
Using a clean towel, whether for your face or your complete body, will help battle the germs that live in toilets. Allowing your moist towel to sit for days attracts germs and mildew, and reusing the same cloth unwittingly spreads bacteria.
Every 2-3 years, however towels and washcloths should be washed after every 3-5 uses.
How often should you replace your bath sponge or loofah?
After using your sponge every day, wring it out to eliminate extra water and hang it to dry in a well-ventilated place. Remember that synthetic, or man-made, materials, such as loofahs or sea sponges, dry faster than natural ones.
After eight weeks, you should discard a mesh bath loofah or isaka which is more resistant to bacteria. You may also sanitise your bath sponge every few days if you want to be particularly cautious.
Toothbrushes
As a rule, dentists encourage you to change your toothbrush once every three to four months. But do we listen?
If you have a toothbrush cover great, if not, your exposed and wet toothbrush is a breeding ground for germs. If you live with a few people, your toothbrushes are bound to touch at the head…imagine.
