An anonymous listener shares that her boyfriend recently discovered she is still receiving an allowance from her ex. Feeling guilty about this, the listener is torn between telling her ex to stop sending her money, which has proven to be helpful. She also noted that her current partner doesn’t earn much and rarely gives her an allowance.
“Uncle T, my boyfriend, recently found out that my ex still gives me a monthly allowance. I was with my ex for five years, and after seeing that he would never stop with his infidelity, I walked away. We have remained friends, and he sends me money every month. I understand why my current boyfriend is angry. However, he doesn’t make much money, and the money my ex sends has been helping us a lot. He told me to tell my ex to stop sending me money. But, to be honest, I won’t do that.
“My boyfriend can barely afford to do anything for me, and on top of the allowance my ex sends, if ever I run short and I tell him, he will complain that he doesn’t have money. I love my boyfriend, but I have a lot of financial responsibilities he can’t help me with, so his request is unfair, especially since he also benefits. I know I am wrong, but?”
