Relationship tension and disputes about money can arise, particularly when it comes time to pay the bills. Different couples handle this in different ways.
Anonymous reached out to The Best T In The City to address her concerns about the finances in her relationship with his boyfriend who strickly wants to continue evenly splitting every expense in the relationship 50/50.
“Uncle T, I have been with my boyfriend for a year. I love him but, he wants to go 50/50 on everything. We go out, 50/50 on food and drinks, buying food and snacks when I visit 50/50, baecations 50/50, even on my birthday I paid for some things. He is kind and soft-spoken, which I love, but this 50/50 thing is starting to get to me. He has hinted that he wants us to move in together and while the idea makes sense, I have no doubts it’ll be 50/50 on everything. I know we need to work together when in a relationship but knowing I cannot rely on my man financially makes me uneasy.
I have never asked him for money, and he has never offered. Sometimes I feel like he takes advantage of my independence. I mean he can’t even give me petrol money. But funny enough, he always helps his sisters when they need financial assistance. I have tried talking to him, but he seems not to get it.
Yes, I can afford myself, but even independent women need to be catered to. I want to give him a spreadsheet of things I want him to be responsible for and most of them are about me, not the house. Is that a good place to start? What could be my BlindSpot?” – Annonymous
