A listener recently reached out to The Best T in the City with Tbose to express her concerns about her husband being too strict with their sons. She shared that he puts a lot of pressure on them to excel in school, sports, and social activities.
Moreover, the situation has become so tense that their children are even afraid to show their report cards to their father. She worries that the kids are beginning to harbour feelings of resentment towards him, and if he doesn’t ease up, it could lead to feelings of depression.
“I feel like my husband is too hard on our boys, who are 13 and 16. He wants them to excel in everything: academics, sports, and social life. He is always pushing them hard, and I can see that the boys are not happy. Whenever I try to talk to him, he tells me that he is grooming the boys, and one day I will thank him. But it is too much.
“Our boys are even afraid to show us their report cards because their father is just never happy. I can see that they are just doing sports to make their father happy. Even when it comes to socializing, he is pushing them to make friends with people they are not used to and can’t relate to. When are they going to just have fun?
“How can I make my husband not live vicariously through our boys? Could there be a bigger issue, or is my husband just doing what every father does? What am I not seeing here?”

Voksman from X suggests that the father may be projecting his own experiences onto the boys. He believes that the father likely has the boys’ best interests in mind, just like any parent would.
