Anonymous achieved financial stability after a tough upbringing and is buying their mother a dream home.
Her dilemma arose when the mother insisted Anonymous’ boundary-violating sister must move in, viewing Anonymous’ refusal as selfishness and abandoning family.
Anonymous is torn between the need for self-preservation and establishing healthy boundaries in their new life, versus the familial obligation to collectively uplift relatives still in poverty, fearing they will be seen as ungrateful or cold-hearted for prioritising their own peace.
Here is her story:
“Uncle T, I had a tough upbringing – I grew up in a shack, and that’s always been home. I’ve been working since I was young, but it was always small jobs, just enough to get by.
Then last year, God came through, and I finally got the job of my dreams, one that truly changed my life and my family’s situation. I started saving, and last month, I sat my mom down to tell her the good news that I’m finally going to make our dream of having a proper house a reality. She was over the moon. She cried, hugged me, and thanked God over and over.
But in the middle of all the excitement, she reminded me about my sister -how she’s been struggling too – and asked her to move in with us once the house is built. Now, Uncle T, I love my sister, but we don’t get along very well. She’s older, doesn’t respect boundaries, and tends to take over everything. I told mom gently that I don’t want anyone else moving in, at least not for now. And the fact is that I want her to enjoy the peace and space she’s never had, finally.
But she got upset and said I shouldn’t forget family now that I have money. So now I’m torn. How do you set boundaries without being seen as selfish? Am I pouring from an empty cup, trying to lift our family out of poverty, while I an still struggling myself? –
