A listener shares that when she began dating her boyfriend, he was unemployed.
She supported him financially for two years, and during that time, he often promised to marry her as soon as he got back on his feet.
However, now that he is employed, talk of marriage has disappeared. Instead, his focus has shifted entirely to buying his dream car.
Reaching out to The Best T in the City with Tbose, Anonymous wants to know if there are any blind spots she could be overlooking.
“Shortly after I met my boyfriend, he unfortunately lost his job. I love him, so I decided to stick it out, his unemployment didn’t shake me. He comes from a good family, and I believe they’d support him too. We kept going strong, and for over a year, he’d often say: “The day I get a job, the first thing I’ll do is send a letter home. You’ve held me down and never made me feel like a burden.”
“Well, earlier this year, after two years of being unemployed, he finally found a job. We were both so happy. But now, five months in, things are starting to feel… off. He no longer talks about marriage like he used to. In fact, the only thing he keeps bringing up is buying himself a car. That has me confused. I really thought he’ll keep his and soon his uncles would be at my parents’ gate, but now I’m not so sure.
“I’m a church girl. From the start, I told him I didn’t want to be a girlfriend for long. I accepted that role while he was unemployed, but now that he has the means, I expected him to follow through on his promise. Should I confront him and ask if his plans have changed? Or do I wait and watch? I feel a little betrayed. Was I naive to believe that once the job came, marriage would follow? What could be my blind spot?”
