Dr. Sam Goldstein, a Neuropsychologist, took to Tik Tok to advocate for the idea of licensing politicians to hold them accountable in the same manner as other licensed professionals. Goldstein believes a step in this direction could ensure greater performance and accountability in the political sphere.
To further explore this concept, Leadership Specialist Dumisani Tembe joined 959 Breakfast in the discussion.
Tembe shares the same sentiments that politicians play a crucial role as decision-makers, impacting every aspect of society.
“Politicians are decision-makers, and they make binding decisions. Their decisions affect each and every profession in the country. That’s where the difficulty lies because if you don’t professionalize politics, the modern state we live under is a highly professionalized institution,” he said.
Tembe further emphasized that certain decisions require one to be qualified, hence the discipline of political science. He adds that there’s never been a greater need for “informed, knowledgeable, and qualified” leaders in politics than now.
“The fact is that modern forms of leadership require some form of knowledge. This is why, for example, you will have a minister of justice who has some form of legal education. There is an inclination to move in that direction, so we can’t just say that because people could not be mayors in the past, now we should just let anyone be mayor. It requires a particular quality of politics to build a society,” said the Leadership Specialist.
