This morning on 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka we are decoding legendary South African music group Mafikizolo.
Speaking about losing one-third of the group Tebogo Madingoane in 2004, Nhalnhla Nciza says it was a difficult time in their lives.
“I remember when people heard the news of his passing everyone was just a mess. Even at the memorial service, everyone was in tears because Tebogo was a bubbly person.”
She adds that because she and Theo are so reserved, Tebogo’s personality brought a different dynamic to their group.
Theo shares that after Tebogo’s passing, they took a year’s break from recording music.
“We were trying to find out where to form there. The record label decided that in honour of Tebogo, we were not going to replace him.”
On balancing work and family life
Due to always being on the road, Theo and Nhlanhla hardly get time to spend with their families.
“Us being in such a busy industry has obviously had an effect. More especially on the kids,” Theo adds.
“We tend to lose moments to share with them, more especially when they are young.”
In January each year, the group takes time off to be with their loved ones.
They attribute a big part of their success to their manager Modise.
“Our manager is playing a big role, he doesn’t sleep – He is making sure that it is not only myself and Nhlanhla being taken care of, but he is making sure that people are paid on time,” says Theo.
Nhlanhla advises upcoming musicians to protect their brand.
In order to protect your brand, you can’t just go out and do whatever you want. It is very important for you to protect the brand because it doesn’t just end with music.
Coporate is also involved and corporate South Africa doeesn’t want to work with scandelous people.”
