Eight-year-old Daniel Jamneck was allegedly raped and murdered by his friend’s father during a sleepover in Cape Town. The horrific incident reportedly occurred on June 15, 2023.
The suspect was denied bail in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He is expected back in court on August 14, 2023.
This sparked a discussion on 959 Breakfast about the safety of children when it comes to sleepovers. Mpho Maboi shared her experience with her kids and sleepovers. The line was then opened to listeners to share how they discern the good from the bad when making a decision on sleepovers for their kids.
Tips on keeping children safe during sleepovers:
- Know the host family well. This includes knowing the parents or guardians who will be supervising the sleepover as well as any other adults or older children who will be present.
- Talk to your child about safety. Before your child goes to a sleepover, talk to them about safety in general as well as specific safety concerns that may be relevant to the sleepover, such as swimming pools, guns, or alcohol.
- Regularly check in with your child. Call or text your child throughout the night to see how they’re doing.
