There have been talks in the media that we could see the American currency, the US Dollar, lose its dominance in trade. Director and Currency Risk Strategist at Treasury One, Andre Celliers joins 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka to unpack this.
Celliers notes that the news should be “met with a bit of excitement” as there could be more of a “stabilization of foreign exchange markets and a little bit less dependence from all the other currencies on the dollar.”
There are already talks that a currency formed within the BRICS countries could be used as a “counter currency to the Dollar.”
Celliers adds that this would bring in “some volatility in exchange rate risks and in the import and export markets for Americans” as this would mean there is “less dependence on what happens in the other countries.”
