Bheki Mlangeni Hospital in Soweto performed its first heart surgery on 20-year-old Tumisang Motsikwa.
The young man was stabbed in the heart outside his high school on Freedom Day while trying to help a grade 10 schoolmate who was being mugged. Upon his arrival at the hospital, Motsikwa was critical.
CEO of Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital, Makabedi Makgetha says it was a proud moment for them.
“It is indeed a proud moment for our institution that we managed to pull this one. It’s not the first one. We have done a few things that we are pulling in the same direction. One of the things that I was asked about when I came was ‘What is it that you are going to do to turn the tide?'”
One of the things she wanted to implement in the hospital was a winning team.
“The first thing was a winning team. So we have been working day and night to try and get the best team we can. Both clinically and leadership-wise. We have managed to do that with the help of all stakeholders and the hospital board. We are pulling in the same direction,” said Makgetha.
