ANC MP Tina Joemat-Pettersson has passed away aged 59 – the details around her death are still sketchy at this point.
ANC chief whip Pemmy Majodina confirmed that Pettersson passed away on Monday.
Pettersson served as the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police from July 2019 until her death in June 2023. She held various ministerial positions in the South African government, including Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (2009-2014) and Minister of Energy (2014-2017).
The ANC paid tribute to Pettersson through a statement.
“Death has robbed our movement and the people of South Africa of a humble, dependable, and dedicated servant. The ANC pays tribute to this extraordinary freedom fighter whose sacrifices and commitment to the liberation of her people remain a source of inspiration to many young cadres of our movement.
“All those who love justice, freedom, and democracy will sorely miss her intellectual sharpness, political maturity, and passion for defending those who are vulnerable in our society, especially women. In this regard, Comrade Tina was unrelenting in her gender activism.”
