Max Mqadi, owner of the popular KwaZulu-Natal township lounge Max’s Lifestyle, remains in a stable condition in hospital following an apparent hit on his life last week.
Mqadi was leaving the establishment when he was shot. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Umlazi SAPS are investigating further.
Max’s Lifestyle management confirmed that he was shot at close range by unknown suspects.
eThekwini Municipality has condemned the attack.
“Mr Mqadi is one of the pioneers of Township Tourism in our city. His popular eatery draws visitors from all over the world. We wish him a speedy recovery,” says City spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela.
He reassured tourists that Durban is still the place to be.
“Our tourism attractions continue to be safe and to offer excellent value for money, in addition to superior visitor experiences. As we prepare for the holiday season the city is working hard to ensure that tourists have a safe and enjoyable stay in Durban,” says Mayisela.

Calls for swift action
KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala also wished Mqadi a speedy recovery.
“Max’s Lifestyle remains one of the premier drawcards to local and international tourists and has contributed immensely to creating jobs in uMlazi. Attacks such as these may therefore reverse the gains we have made in this regard,” says Zikalala.
KZN government calls for swift action from the police to ensure that suspects are arrested.
“Law enforcement agencies must ramp up efforts to hold accountable those behind this senseless attack. This barbaric act has left many citizens shocked and fearful,” adds Zikalala.
Facebook users have sent well wishes to Mqadi.
