Soweto’s Amukelani Mokone has been playing tennis since the age of seven. Amu is with Tennis South Africa’s development programme at the Arthur Ashes Tennis Centre in Soweto, which is where Kaya 959 first met Amu when she was 12. Oupa Nthuping is the 14 year old’s coach says her passion for the sport has seen her improve to become his number one player. So talented are Amu and the rest of the youngsters at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre that in 2016 they caught the eye of Lebo M. After hearing about Amu and company on Kaya 959, Lebo M of The Lion King fame, came to the rescue and donated R50 000 to TSA to ensure that the kids have access to equipment and are able to travel to tournaments.
In March 2017 Amu was selected for the SA U15 Schools Team that will tour the UK in June, a trip which costs almost R50 000. Thanks to generous donations from PWC, Lepule Consultants and The Phuthanang Youth Trust, Kaya 959 with the help of the Afropolitans raised R70 000 for Amu to play in the United Kingdom in June. On the 21st April 2017, Kaya 959 handed over the cheque of R70 000 to Amu and her grandparents who have been supporting her in her love for tennis since grade 1.
Congratulations Amu and we wish you all the best from Kaya 959.
