The buildings in Dakar tend to sprawl as opposed to rising to the sky.
With Senegal being predominantly Muslim and Islam coming to the area in the 11th Century, there is a strong Islamic influence when it comes to architecture, particularly within Dakar, further emphasised by the multiple mosques dotted around the city. When the French colonised the country, they also brought their style of building. And, as most of the buildings are renovated and restored, you also get a sense of how the people of Senegal built traditionally as well as how these integrated architecture styles are evolving in a more contemporary world.
