A US hospital has rejected a heart transplant patient because he is not vaccinated for COVID-19.
31-year-old DJ Ferguson has been at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for nearly 50 days and is now in the critical stages of heart failure and needs a transplant if he’s to have any chance of survival.
The hospital states that he is no longer eligible as he hasn’t yet received the COVID-19 vaccine. According to his family, he refuses to take the vaccine.
His father informed CBS that his heart has now deteriorated and they are considering moving him elsewhere.
Statement from the hospital
According to a statement from the hospital, a COVID-19 vaccine is one of several vaccines and behaviors required for transplant candidates.
“Like many other transplant programs in the United States – the COVID-19 vaccine is one of the several vaccines and lifestyle behaviors required for transplant candidates in the Mass General Brigham system in order to create both the best chance for a successful operation and also the patient’s survival after transplant.”
