There are winds of change happening at the Windybrow Arts Centre, we spoke to Frank Leya the CEO and Founder of Honest Travel Experience who took us through the work that is being done in the space to uplift the youth in the community. The Windybrow Heritage House has been around for over 120 years and continues to be a well-known cultural venue in Hillbrow, at the moment it houses community initiatives aimed at transforming the lives of the youth through art, empowerment, and travel.

Honest Travel also does food tours in and around the inner-city where they give the tourist a culinary experience with foods from across the continent. As part of the ongoing expansion, they will be hosting a chef a month at Winibrow Theatre who will be cooking Africa from the extensive pool of authentically African dishes.
“We have a food tour that runs every Sunday in Yeoville, which is like the most Pan-African place in Johannesburg. We do Yeoville, Berea, and Hillbrow, often enough we visit different restaurants. This is going to be one restaurant where we showcase, where we have one chef that will be cooking for the whole month.”
The company offers travel experiences in the inner-city that are affordable and making the world accessible to everyone. Their experiences are driven by their honest nature, allowing people to see the beauty in places that are regarded as ‘negative spaces. “We wanted to build itineraries for young people like myself, we wanted to make the world accessible through affordable experiences.” say Frank Leya.

Leya believes it’s important for the community to be taught about the space in their community and what their importance in the history of this country.
“We are trying to educate the city in order to be proud of the spaces they occupy, it’s all transitional and people typically treat a hotel different from how they treat their homes. People don’t respond to well to spaces to places they have no emotional attachments to.”
He says they are trying to make the inner-city a home again fo the community through changing the way we interact with the space in the inner-city.
