The commuters were left stranded in Orlando, Soweto, this morning. Klipspruit Valley Road and the Soweto highway in Orlando was blockaded by the taxis this morning. Some passengers were also forced off taxis’ by the associations. It is believed the taxi associations WATA and NANDUWE ‘disputes flare up again.
MEC for roads and transport Jacob Mamabolo dissolved executives of the associations last year following the deaths of two people during the battles.
The reasons for the disputes this morning are not yet known.
Mamabolo sent a stern warning to the two taxi associations involved in a dispute in Soweto. He says the feud must stop – or he will shut down all the routes the associations operate.
The Witwatersrand African Taxi Owners Association and Nancefield Dube West Taxi Association have blocked roads around Soweto this morning. Mamabolo says he is very disappointed in the associations as there are processes in place for resolving disputes.
