“We know we’re not recognized” – David Kau to McKenzie on government support to SA comedians.
David Kau has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture for neglecting to recognize and support stand-up comedians in the country.
Kau, who has been in the entertainment industry for over two decades, recently took to X to try to get McKenzie’s attention and requested a meeting to find a way for them to get assistance from the Department.
The conversation began with Kau saying the sector offers hundreds of employment and receives no assistance from the government.
“Do we have to be in the Olympics or die before us Stand-Up comedians meet you Gayton Mckenzie? We know we’re not recognised or there’s no category for us although we have employed hundreds of people without any government assistance but would appreciate a meeting please.”
I would love to engage you all but the Minister or his spokesperson and department will reply. Minister Zizi met with everyone in art n culture except the Comedy sector.

I never said you don’t care. I think we both know you’re one of the biggest supporters in Comedy and my shows ‘in your personal capacity’. My tweet is asking for a meeting and not because of not trying other avenues.
