Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika was played as the bronze medal winners the Blitz Bokke landed at the Cape Town International Airport, to the delight of a jam-packed arrivals hall.
The Springbok Seven was able to secure their second Olympic medal thanks to some incredible performances against New Zealand in the quarterfinals and their dominance over Australia in the third-place play-off.
Despite their difficulties, the Blitzboks battled back over the next two days of play to take third place on Saturday, even though many South Africans had written the team off after two losses on the first day of the competition.
Mr. Mark Alexander, the president of SA Rugby, complimented the team’s tenacity and said it should serve as an inspiration to all in South Africa.
“They came here as underdogs and not many people gave them a chance,” said Mr Alexander, “but they proved that the South African fighting spirit is alive and well in them. They made us proud with their efforts and we want to thank the team for that.”
“It will also be nice to have the team back in Cape Town in December when we host the HSBC SVNS tournament. I am sure the crowds will come out in numbers to support our bronze medallists,”
