Tyla wins Best Afrobeats at the 2024 VMAs.
In the Best Afrobeats category, Tyla took home the 2024 MTV Video Music Award on Wednesday at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
She is now the first South African winner of a VMA. In addition, Tyla received nominations for Best R&B and Best New Artist.
The major winner of the night was Taylor Swift, who took home seven accolades, including Video of the Year for her collaboration with Post Malone on Fortnight.
Among the other winners were Lisa from Blackpink, SZA, Eminem, and Lenny Kravitz. The singer’s big hit, Water, earned her the award. Over 230 million people have viewed the music video on YouTube, while nearly 800 million people have listened to it on Spotify.
Accepting her award she said: ““Like this is just so special but also bittersweet, because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats, African music is so diverse, it’s more than just Afrobeats.”
