Thabiso Sikwane has shared some nuggets of advice about parenting after divorcing the father of her three children, DJ Fresh.
Taking a few moments to herself after a long day, the award-winning broadcaster and author told mothers, especially those doing it all by themselves, to not be so hard on themselves, and advised fathers to be present and show up for their kids.
Thabiso and DJ Fresh announced they were going through a divorce in February 2022, after 20 years of marriage.
The process, which Thabiso started in 2020 was finalized and the former celebrity couple are now keeping to their promise of maintaining a united front and focusing on their children.
Thabiso said she prefers to not use the term co-parenting to describe her relationship with her ex-husband because nothing has changed, and they are in fact still parenting their kids.
“I just felt the need to encourage someone who might be feeling overwhelmed, especially if you’re a first-time parent, or you’ve got small children, the day will come when you are with them but you’re not with them.
It can be so overwhelming sometimes, more so when you’re doing it on your own, so I just want to say hang in there.
There’s no, I don’t think anybody has a formula. Yes, there’s books, parenting classes, there’s things you can do to equip yourself, but you know yourself, your limitations, your capabilities and you know your children.
You find your balance, your own rhythm for your household and as a family.
I can’t stress the importance of praying for wisdom on how to raise the children, cover them in your prayers, pray for them and pray over them.
We need to cover our children in prayer because they are up against so much, and the world that we’ve brought them into is something else, it’s crazy. So, this is just a word of encouragement to say you’re doing good.
Know that you’re doing your best, give yourself a pat on the back.”
Thabiso shared how grateful she is to be raising their children together, even after divorce.
While the couple share three children, DJ Fresh fathered a daughter from a previous relationship, whom Thabiso included as part of their family.
“I don’t know where I’d be as a parent without praying for wisdom. By His grace, we’ve been able to raise four amazing children and it’s such a blessing that even after our divorce we are parenting.
I don’t use the term co-parenting because nothing has changed in terms of how we see our roles as parents and I’m really grateful for that.
We are both present in our children’s lives.”
