Social media users are unimpressed with Fikile Mbalula’s tweet.
Hundreds of Twitter users have taken to the platform to complain about African National Congress’s Secretary General and Minster of Transport Fikile Mbalula’s latest tweet where he made fun of the electricity crisis in the country.
In the tweet, Mbalula is seen with a photoshopped image of himself, caption “Ndimlo”, which means “This is me” with laughing emojis.
The image also shows him holding two electric wires showing him visibly electrocuted, written “Minister of Electricity?”.
The image has been viewed over 2 million times.
The image was posted as the country experiences rolling blackouts which have affected many people’s livelihoods, and many on social media have not found the humour behind the image.

Social media users have expressed dissatisfaction with the tweet, with most agreeing that it was insensitive and tone-deaf.
“None of these Ministers face load shedding. Of course they’ll tweet and laugh about it – why is everyone so surprised? You think they know what you’re going through?” wrote one user
“They’re making jokes while you live in the dark and businesses go under.” another user commented.
“South Africa is in a state of disarray and what the people who lead us do? They offend us and make jokes out of the suffering that they have caused us. The stakes aren’t as high for them because they are protected from the same suffering they cause us. Why do we let them?” wrote another user.
Today we had no lights for close to 14 hours. My insulin got warm sitting in a fridge that wasn’t on and I can’t get any more until Dischem calls for me to collect. But I mean haha I guess ? https://t.co/u8EDw8FKEh
