The highly acclaimed series Shaka iLembe is set to return for its second season in June, following the success of its captivating first season.
Lemogang Tsipa will reprise his lead role as Shaka, while Thembinkosi Mthembu, who won a SAFTA for Best Actor in Season 1, returns to deliver another gripping performance as Dingiswayo.
Season 1 followed Shaka’s journey into manhood, shaped by trials that defined his destiny. It also explored Dingiswayo’s exile and his unwavering devotion to Baleka, as he fought against death and slavery to reclaim his place in history. Meanwhile, Queen Nandi, portrayed by Nomzamo Mbatha, stood resolute in her love for her son, defying societal expectations with unshakable determination.
Season 2 picks up as Shaka and Nandi arrive at KwaNobamba, where Shaka begins his reign as the new Zulu King.
“Season 2 is a journey into the very soul of Shaka’s world,” says Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment at MultiChoice. “We get to explore Shaka the King, the strategist, the visionary—as he builds an empire.”
The series also sees the return of fan favourites, including Wiseman Mncube as the ruthless Zwide, Dawn Thandeka King as the formidable Mkabayi and narrator, Khabonina Qubeka as the power-driven Ntombazi, and Mondli Makhoba as the steadfast Ngomane.
Season 2 expands the story, introducing new characters who will leave their mark on history. “The new cast members are an explosion of talent,” says Desiree Markgraaff, partner and Executive Producer for Shaka iLembe. “They bring fresh energy, exploring the complexities of power, love, and loyalty in this turbulent era.”
She adds, “There are many new stories we explore, taking us to the majestic mountains of the Swati kingdom and the rolling hills of the Xhosa. South Africa is rich with characters, and we’re just beginning to uncover them. Stay tuned.”
