DJ Maphorisa has failed in his bid to have assault charges against him dropped after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) decided to continue with the case which was brought forward by his girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo.
Despite Phongolo withdrawing her statement, and her assault charge against him, the NPA cites that there is sufficient evidence against DJ Maphorisa, whose real name is Themba Sekowe.
Phongolo accused her boyfriend of assaulting her with his fists and elbow during an argument on Sunday, 07 May.
The 29-year old told police that her DJ boyfriend became aggressive and continuously punched and hit her, grabbing her by the neck and taking her to the balcony where they fought over her phone which he had in his possession.
After managing to get her phone back, Phongolo called her manager who took her to the police station to open a case of domestic violence.
However, a few days after the incident, Phongolo and DJ Maphorisa issued a joint statement asking for privacy, saying they’ve both decided to deal with the matter privately.
DJ Maphorisa, who was released on bail of R4 000 made a brief court appearance on 14 June where the matter was postponed to 05 July.
The matter was once again postponed to 26 July.
