The commemoration of Youth Day this year, 2022, marks the 46th anniversary of the 16 June Soweto uprising
On the 16th of June 1976, more than 20 000 learners from Soweto began a protest march. In the wake of clashes with the police and the violence that ensued during the weeks that followed, it is estimated that 700 hundred people, many of them youth, were killed.
Sharing the iconic image of Hector Peterson wounded and being carried by another Soweto resident while his sister runs next to them, businesswoman Mamkhize wished South Africans a happy Youth Day.
She says the image “will always serve as a reminder of where we come from and how hard the youth of SA fought against an unjust and racist system.”
She adds: “To the youth of 1976, we will never forget your sacrifices. You showed us what it meant to be fearless, brave, and unwavering. My hope is that each and every generation is inspired to always fight for what is right.”
Sharing what Youth Day means to him, Robot Boi says it is “the realisation of a vision and a dream fought for by thousands of South African youths. It is a celebration of youth, power, and unity, how we as young people can impact the world if we put our minds to it,” he said in part.
