South African actress Gugu Gumede celebrates her 33rd birthday today, 11 December 2024. She took the opportunity to honour her late mother, who passed away three years ago.
“Three years after losing my beloved mother, I turn 33. This birthday has been a breath of fresh air—empowering and renewing,” shared Gumede.
She also offered words of encouragement to those dealing with grief, urging them not to allow it to steal their joy or future happiness.
“It is not God’s will (nor the will of our departed loved ones) for us to merely survive, but to thrive. I am proof of that. Ngisaphila. Ngisaphumelela. Praise to the Most High,” she concluded.
Gugu Gumede’s mother, Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, was a prominent South African politician who served as the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology under Jacob Zuma’s administration. She was also the President of the National Freedom Party (NFP).
In a heartfelt Instagram post in 2021, Gumede paid tribute to her late mother:
“There is never a point in life where one wishes to walk the path that I am on; but such is life—we are born, we fulfil our assignment to the best of our abilities, and we depart. My mother was a giant. A king.”
The actress described her mother as her best friend, confidant, greatest supporter, and prayer warrior.
“She came from nothing and had the task of breaking many generational curses, blessing many family members in between. She was a dedicated public servant, a pioneer, and an activist who changed many people’s lives. To my brother and me, though, she was Mommy,” wrote Gumede.
