Education Department to look at changes for school uniforms as costs skyrocket.
The national Department of Basic Education must carry out a baseline assessment, according to the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), to establish a fair ceiling on the price of basic school uniforms that takes into account the socioeconomic conditions of the nation.

In a report released in October 2023, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) assessed important issues pertaining to a number of topics that affected the rights and welfare of students nationwide.
“The commission noted an increase in complaints that reached our offices, relating to not only school uniforms but also the appearance of learners. What we can do as the Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), we can assess the matters and intervene almost from a systematic point of view. We then call for an inquiry to assertain the perception that an over regulation of school uniforms and appearances. What that basically meant is that we those affected to come to us to explain their experiences, concerns and perception of what was happening.

One of the commission’s primary concerns was the need to limit the price of school uniforms in order to lessen the financial strain on families. It was the DBE’s responsibility to establish a “reasonable” cap on this.
