Sbusiso Leope, better known as DJ Sbu has broken his silence on Zahara’s passing sharing that he understands people are angry, but affirms he is not to blame for the singer’s untimely passing.
Speaking to SABC News, DJ Sbu honoured the legacy of the late South African songstress who passed away on Monday, 11 December after being hospitalized for a few weeks.
Zahara was reportedly battling a liver disease, and her condition worsened after she was taken to hospital on 27 November, finally succumbing to her condition.
The 36-year-old singer was signed to DJ Sbu and TK Nciza’s record label TS Records, but left the label after her second album, claiming for years that she was owed royalties.
In 2011, Sbu and TK introduced Zahara to the world with her debut album Loliwe, but 10 years later Zahara spoke out claiming she had not received payment for her work on the album.
Things got heated between the pair, and DJ Sbu demanded an apology from Zahara.
Since Zahara’s passing, DJ Sbu has been receiving backlash on social media from angry fans who felt he betrayed her by not paying her what she was due.
In response, Sbu said that he too was grieving and mourning her loss, and as is customary, has paid a visit to Zahara’s family to extend his condolences.
“We are heartbroken. The fact that her life has been in the public eye since we started working together in 2011, I would like South Africans to remember her as one of THE most talented singers we’ve ever had in this country.
She has made history, she was a loving person, she was kind, she was extremely, extremely talented.
I was like a big brother to her, she was like my little sister, and despite what is out there in the public, people might be angry and need to find someone to blame, and a lot of people are saying I’m to blame and they are blaming me.
Even though I am not, but having worked in the public eye for so long, I understand how we are as South Africans especially when we love our own. So, it’s okay.
Let’s be angry, let’s be sad, let’s mourn, let’s grieve. I’m also grieving as well, and I see a lot of messages from people online, and that’s fine, as the bigger brother, I’ll take all of your cries, all of your messages and complaints because I understand that you’re angry.”
