South African actor Clint Brink opened up about his ex-girlfriend Marubini Mogale, during a lengthy interview with King David Studio a few days ago.
During the 3-hour long interview the Binnelanders actor, recalled how he met and fell into a “fairytale” love affair with the 21-year when he was still a young newcomer in the industry.
Brink recalled the devastating car crash which took Mogale’s life, while he and the actress’ sister, who were also occupants of the vehicle, survived.
The tragic accident in 2002 ended with Mogale being declared dead on the scene, after the car crashed and landed on its roof.
“Hey man, fairytale stuff really, here I am film student filled with passion, really just wanted to be the best actors I could be. I’m one of two members of the cast that was living in Cape Town. I felt like a bit of an outsider at first, and I remember Marubini came up to me and she goes, ‘you play Shaun, I play Irene.’
What Backstage was successful at, well many things, but they cast really close to type.
Irene was supposed to be this sweet, innocent, pretty girl next door with a mushy heart and naive, and she was all of that.
And, obviously spending time with her and starting to do scenes with her, I started to recognise certain people for their traits. I resonated with her because I wasn’t a big talker, I wasn’t boastful, I didn’t know how to be egotistical.
I was shy and really just wanted to do well at my work, and I think that’s also what got people’s attention.
Being a 19-year old/ 20-year old, being on your first set working closely with people, and now I have this girl who’s more or less my age and being kind to me and showing an interest in me, and me showing an interest in her obviousl, evolved into the scenario set for deep romance.
I had no choice and I followed my heart, and it was a really great experience, and then obviously what followed was really difficult, it was one of the most difficult things in my life.”

At the time of the accident Brink and Mogale were on their way to family for their engagement, driving from Petersburg to Paarl, Brink’s hometown.
Brink says he never made it home to the ring that he asked his dad to help him get for Mogale, as two cars forced him off the road, causing him to lose control of their vehicle.
What followed was an investigation for culpable homicide, all while the 43-year old actor was dealing with his loss.
Clint Brink is now married to Steffi van Wyk and the couple have a baby together.
