The powerful new documentary, Mothers of Chibok, is set to premiere at the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival, from 19 to 29 June 2025.
The documentary, which is directed by Kachi Benson, is a moving follow-up to the emotionally renowned film, Daughters of Chibok.
Daughters of Chibok won Best Immersive Story at the 76th Venice International Film Festival in 2019.
The documentary told the story of Yana Galang, whose daughter was among the 276 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram militants from their dormitory in Chibok, northeastern Nigeria, in April 2014.
The mass kidnapping shocked the world and sparked the global #BringBackOurGirls campaign.
While some of the girls were later released following negotiations between the government and the terrorists, many still remain unaccounted for.
Now, more than a decade later, Benson returns with Mothers of Chibok, an intimate and deeply human portrayal of the mothers who continue to endure the pain of not knowing what became of their daughters.
Through their voices, the documentary explores the enduring grief, resilience, and unwavering hope of women left in the shadows of global attention.
Last year, during the 10th anniversary since the abductions happened, Kachi expressed on his Instagram that he is continuously inspired by the mothers who remain hopeful that their daughters will one day return home.
“Their faith is inspiring, they’ve refused to give up hope, and that is what I choose to remember today, not the tears, not the pain, but the HOPE”.
