Yesterday, friends, family, and fans of the late South African actor Don Mlangeni gathered at the Soweto Theatre in Johannesburg to pay tribute to the former Isidingo star.
Speaking at the memorial, actress Asavela Mqokiyana recalled meeting “uBab Don” at an audition in 2019, where they instantly connected.
“Despite his frailty, his sense of humour and stern demeanour remained,” said Asavela, who noted how deeply she was struck by Mlangeni’s wisdom, fatherly affection, and the fact that they shared a star sign.
Reflecting on what she described as one of her “most challenging” periods last year, Asavela shared, “uBab Don said to me, ‘I’m here because you were there for me when I needed you the most.’ I’ll forever be grateful for his unwavering support.”
After some time apart, Asavela recently returned to Johannesburg, and Mlangeni insisted she not leave without seeing him.
“I’m grateful I went to see him that Wednesday, not knowing that the following Wednesday he would no longer be with us. That visit allowed him to meet my daughter,” she said.
“The day before he passed, he sent me a message which I now choose to call Umphako we Mpilo, because to me, it felt like a reassurance of his love and support over the years.”
The former Isibaya actress also offered heartfelt words to Mlangeni’s wife.
“To his wife — I am so sorry you’ve lost your best friend and partner. I promise to keep the flame of our friendship alive and to remain family, as uBab Don would have wanted.”
Concluding her tribute, Asavela said: “I’ve lost a friend and a father. Rest in peace, Bab Don. I love you, and I’ll miss you dearly.”
