South Africa is mourning the loss of renowned actor Presley Chweneyagae, whose death was confirmed on the morning of Tuesday, 27 May 2025. He was 40 years old.
Chweneyagae, best known for his powerful performances in The River and the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi, was celebrated as one of the country’s most gifted talents.
His passing was confirmed by his agency, MLA, in an official statement.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the untimely passing of one of South Africa’s most gifted and beloved actors, Presley Chweneyagae, at the age of 40,” the statement read.
At this stage, the cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
Earlier this year, Chweneyagae had made a highly anticipated return to screens in the The River spin-off series, Cobrizi, reprising his popular role as Thuso ‘Cobra’ Mokoena.
The show, which premiered on Mzansi Magic in March 2025, follows Cobra’s journey as he tries to prove himself as a father to his youngest child while confronting the shadows of his troubled past.
Set in inner-city Johannesburg, the series also explores Cobra’s unexpected discovery of love.
Fans and colleagues alike have taken to social media to express their shock and grief, remembering Chweneyagae for his immense talent, on-screen presence, and contributions to South African storytelling.
