What currency should I bring?

The currency in Dubai is the UAE dirham (AED). Almost all major shopping centres and restaurants accept payments with credit cards of international standard. However, travellers who hope to get a discount when purchasing a product at markets are recommended to get a sufficient amount of cash. Some markets and shops may accept U.S. dollars, but the exchange rate will be significantly undervalued. We also recommend getting smaller denominations for tipping.

Climate

November temperatures average about 31’C during the day and 19’C at night with very little humidity. Weather-wise, November is considered one of the best times to visit Dubai.

Visas & Passport Requirements.

All passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of return into South Africa and must have at least two blank pages available for entry/exit stamps. South African passport holders need to get a visa prior to arrival – but don’t worry, we have this covered and the cost is included in your package. All that we require from you is a scanned copy of your passport and a scanned copy of a passport/ID photo. We will advise other nationalities if they require visas at the time of booking and we will be able to arrange these for you on your behalf as well.

Local time in Dubai?

Dubai is 2 hours ahead of South Africa time.

Can I drink the water in Dubai?

Yes. You can drink the tap water in Dubai, however because the water is desalinated, it lacks essential minerals and nutrients and it is therefore recommended that one drinks bottled water. When travelling we do always advise that one drinks bottled water to avoid any unnecessary stomach issues.

What language is spoken in Dubai?

Although Arabic is the official language of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), English is the most spoken language in Dubai.

Do I require any inoculations?

No inoculations are required when travelling from South Africa to Dubai.

What star rating is the hotel:

5-star

  • Satellite TV
  • Telephone
  • In-room Safe
  • Hairdryer
  • In-room tea and coffee making facilities
  • Mini-bars in each room (this is for guests own account)

  • Fitness Centre
  • Sauna and Steam room
  • Beauty Salon offering nail treatments, haircuts, make-up, facials and waxing

Is there free Wi-Fi at Mövenpick Hotel Bur Dubai?

Yes, there is complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. In fact most tourist sites, airport, shopping malls, restaurants etc offer complimentary Wi-Fi. However, WhatsApp and Skype calls are blocked, which means one is only able to use these for texting.

What to Pack

  • Generally comfortable lightweight clothing is suitable
  • Include a light jacket/light cardigan in your suitcase for evenings just in case
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes
  • Sunblock
  • Hats (VERY IMPORTANT!)
  • Sunglasses
  • Passport

Photographs:

There are professional photographers at most tourist sites – and, although they take amazing photos…they are very expensive. We therefore suggest taking your own photographs and sharing any great ones with your fellow travellers.

Etiquette/Dess Code

Travelers should take into account a number of local rules of etiquette. Tourists are not allowed to photograph local people without their permission as this will be considered a sign of bad manners and disrespect. Women dressed in long black robes cannot be photographed due to religious reasons. Also, tourists are prohibited to take pictures of strategically important facilities (police stations, the city’s airport area or sea berths).

General touring/shopping/sight-seeing:  Do not forget to choose your clothes carefully when packing. Extravagant, as well as too revealing clothes, can cause confusion among other people and their various religious beliefs. Visitors wearing open or revealing clothes may be prohibited to enter certain attractions. Ladies are required to have their shoulders covered and wear tops with sleeves, and three-quarter pants or long skirts. Very short mini-skirts, very-short shorts, see-through clothing, revealing clothing, tube tops, crop tops etc are not acceptable. For women, this means wearing shirts that cover the shoulders and pants or skirts that cover the knees. For men, this means no muscle tanks or short shorts. Yep, men have to cover their knees too. Three-quarter and long jeans/trousers and short-sleeved t-shirts or tops are a safe option. Most places have the air-conditioning blasting so high that you’ll be happy to be protected from the cold with a little extra clothing anyway.

Desert Safari:  For the Desert Safari there’s a lot more leeway when it comes to what is acceptable to wear as you will be surrounded by tourists only. Shorts and tank tops are fine, although not highly recommended as you have the option of riding camels and sitting on rugs in the sand for dinner and a show. Loose or stretchy pants are great or even leggings. Basically, anything that allows for a range of motion so you can comfortably sit on the floor on cushions. Keep in mind that in the desert it does get cold at night. Take along a cardigan or light sweater to put on once the sun goes down.

Clubbing:  Dress code for clubs is different to the above (as most are housed in hotels due to the alcohol licensing and serving restrictions). Clothing in clubs is modern, fashionable – very cosmopolitan. Skirts and dresses can be a lot shorter. However, the hitch here is travelling to or from a club and what is considered acceptable or unacceptable in a public area or taxi. You may need to cover up with a shawl, pashmina or jacket until inside the club. There is, however, a nightclub in the hotel, so you will be able to put on your party-attire and go straight into the club. For guys – to avoid getting turned away at the doors, best not to wear training shoes and sandals.

Is alcohol allowed in Dubai?

The attitude to drinking in Dubai is quite ambiguous. Despite the fact that many restaurants and bars serve a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, their use is allowed in specially designated places only. Appearance on a street of the city in a drunken state is a violation of public order, and in some cases, such behaviour can lead to large fines. Alcoholic drinks are pretty pricey. One is able to buy alcoholic drinks at Duty-Free on arrival at the airport. The allowance per person is a total of 4 litres of wine, spirits or beer.

What Plug Adapter do I need for Dubai?

3 prong flat adapter (as per the square UK plugs.
