Dj Black Coffee, South African multi award-winning record producer and DJ, who also acted as executive producer on the film, recently spoke to Breakfast With David about his involvement with the Matwetwe project.
The story is set on New Year’s Eve in a township called Atteridgeville, in the city of Tshwane where Lefa and Papi, best friends and recent high school graduates, take the audience on an action-packed thrill ride of their lives with hilarious twists and turns.
Growing up in Durban and the Eastern Cape, Black Coffee says the story of Matwetwe reminded him of his early childhood memories of living in the township.

At the center of the of the story he explains is the importance of telling authentic South African stories that shape and change the way in which we are perceived by the world.
“…It’s us who can change how people see us, as a continent…, I think it time we start telling our stories, only us can inspire us…” he says. He also spoke on how the majority of stories we see of ourselves in cinemas these days are romantic comedies, crime stories etc; and that Matwetwe has a very genuine story about the South African experience in the townships.
